Horseradish is a hardy perennial root crop known for its strong, pungent flavor and powerful medicinal qualities. Grown for its long white taproot, it has been used for centuries as both a food and a natural remedy for digestion, circulation, and respiratory support. Once established, it becomes one of the easiest and most reliable plants you can grow—producing year after year with very little effort.
🌱 What You’re Getting (Bare Root)
Your plant will arrive as a fresh, dormant root cutting. This is the traditional and best way to grow horseradish. Each root is alive, strong, and ready to take off once planted.
📦 When It Arrives (First Steps)
- Open immediately and inspect the root
- If dry, soak in water for 1–2 hours before planting
- Keep cool and slightly moist if you cannot plant right away (refrigerator works short-term)
- Do NOT let it dry out completely
🌿 How to Plant
- Plant root at a 45° angle, with the top (thinner end) slightly above the soil line
- Space 18–24 inches apart
- Choose full sun to partial shade
- Works great in-ground or in large containers
Soil: Loose, rich, well-draining soil produces the biggest roots
Depth: Cover with 2–3 inches of soil
🌞 How to Grow & Care
- Water regularly until established, then it becomes very drought-tolerant
- Remove weeds early—once established, horseradish will outcompete most plants
- Minimal feeding needed, but compost will boost growth
- Cut back flower stalks if you want stronger root production
⚠️ Important: Horseradish spreads easily—plant it where you want it permanently or grow in containers to control it.
🥕 Harvesting
- Best harvested in fall after frost (this is when flavor is strongest)
- Dig up roots, cut what you need, and replant a piece for next year
- One planting can supply you for life if maintained properly
❤️ How to Love This Plant
Horseradish thrives on neglect more than attention. Give it a place, decent soil, and sunlight—and it will reward you with a lifetime supply. It’s a survival plant, a medicinal root, and a homestead staple all in one.
🌿 Why Every Homestead Should Have It
- Perennial, comes back every year
- Extremely hardy (handles cold, heat, and poor soil)
- Powerful culinary and medicinal root
- One of the easiest “set it and forget it” crops you can grow
This is not just a plant—this is long-term food security in root form.
