Mullein is a powerful and time-honored medicinal herb known for its soft velvety leaves, towering flower stalk, and wide range of traditional uses. For generations, Mullein has been prized for respiratory support, ear oil preparations, teas, tinctures, salves, and more. It is a must-have for herbalists, homesteaders, and anyone building a medicinal garden.
In its first year, Mullein forms a low-growing rosette of large fuzzy silver-green leaves. In its second year, it sends up a tall flower spike that can reach 4–8 feet or more, covered in bright yellow blooms that attract pollinators. Once established, it often self-seeds and can return year after year naturally.
Mullein has traditionally been used to help support healthy lungs, soothe coughs, support the throat, and is commonly infused into oils for ear comfort. The leaves, flowers, and roots each have unique uses, making this one of the most versatile herbs you can grow.
Mullein thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil. It is drought tolerant once established and grows well in poor soils where many plants struggle. In climates like Arkansas, it can naturalize easily.
This plant is shipped as a dry bare root / dormant root.
When your Mullein arrives, it may appear dry or dormant—this is completely normal and helps protect the plant during shipping.
How to Care for Your Bare Root Mullein Upon Arrival:
• Open immediately and inspect roots.
• Soak roots in room-temperature water for 1–2 hours before planting.
• Plant in loose, well-draining soil with the crown at or slightly above soil level.
• Water thoroughly after planting.
• Keep in a shaded area with no direct sun for the first 3 days while it adjusts.
• Slowly introduce to direct sun after 3 days.
• Avoid overwatering while the roots establish.
How to Grow:
Mullein does well in herb gardens, wildflower beds, and permaculture systems. Once established, it requires very little care. Harvest leaves in the first year, flowers in the second year, and roots when mature. Allowing flowers to go to seed can create future patches naturally.
A rugged, beautiful, and highly useful herb every medicinal or survival garden should have.
