🌿🍍

Pineapple Guava, also known as Feijoa, is one of the best fruiting shrubs or small trees for southern growers and one of the most overlooked edible landscape plants. Unlike tropical pink guavas often sold at big box stores, Pineapple Guava is much more cold hardy and can handle conditions many Arkansas growers face. It is evergreen in warmer climates and can produce delicious fruit along with beautiful edible flowers.

The fruit has a sweet tropical flavor often described as a mix of pineapple, strawberry, mint, and guava. When perfectly ripe, the inside becomes soft, juicy, and highly aromatic. Many people scoop the flesh with a spoon, while others use it in jams, jellies, desserts, wines, or fresh eating.

The flowers are stunning—white petals with bright red centers—and the petals themselves are edible, tasting sweet and slightly like cotton candy. This makes Pineapple Guava both ornamental and productive.

Cold Hardy & Great for Arkansas
Unlike common tropical guavas, Pineapple Guava is much more suitable for Arkansas Zone 7, especially when planted in a protected area. Mature plants can handle temperatures around 10–15°F, and some established plants have survived even lower with protection. In colder winters, top growth may suffer but often recovers.

Pineapple Guava grows as a dense shrub or can be trained into a small tree, typically reaching 8–15 feet tall and wide, though it can be kept smaller with pruning. It makes an excellent hedge, privacy screen, or edible ornamental.

Pollination
Some varieties are partially self-fertile, but having two plants can increase fruit set and yield.

How to Grow
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. It tolerates drought once established but grows and fruits best with regular watering. Mulching around the base helps protect roots and retain moisture. Fertilize lightly in spring.
