This Postpartum Herbal Sitz & Healing Bath Tea is a time-honored, external-use herbal blend traditionally used by midwives after vaginal birth to support perineal healing, reduce swelling and discomfort, support tissue repair, and promote gentle postpartum recovery. This formula is designed to be used as a sitz bath, full bath soak, or herbal pads placed directly in underwear for ongoing support throughout the day.
Crafted with herbs known for their astringent, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, tissue-repairing, and soothing properties, this blend offers deep comfort during one of the most tender healing seasons.
Ingredients & Their Benefits
Yarrow Flower
Traditionally used to support wound healing and bleeding control. Yarrow is known for its astringent properties, helping tighten tissues, reduce swelling, and support postpartum recovery. It has also been historically used to discourage infection and promote faster healing.
Calendula Flower
A powerful skin-healing herb traditionally used to support tissue regeneration, soothe irritation, and calm inflammation. Calendula is gentle yet effective and is commonly used on delicate postpartum tissues to promote comfort and repair.
Plantain Leaf
Known for its drawing and soothing properties, plantain helps calm irritated tissue, reduce inflammation, and support skin repair. Traditionally used for wounds, plantain also helps reduce itching and discomfort.
Witch Hazel Leaf or Bark (herb, not liquid)
Witch hazel is widely used postpartum for its strong astringent and toning effects. It supports tissue tightening, reduces swelling, eases soreness, and helps maintain clean, healthy healing tissue.
Comfrey Leaf (external use only)
Comfrey has long been valued for its ability to support tissue regeneration and cellular repair. Used externally, it promotes skin renewal and comfort during healing.
Chamomile Flower
A gentle calming herb that soothes irritated tissue, eases soreness, and provides mild antimicrobial support. Chamomile also helps promote relaxation during postpartum recovery.
Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris)
Traditionally used for wound care, self-heal supports tissue repair and overall skin health. It is valued for its gentle astringent and restorative properties.
Rose Petals (optional aromatic addition)
Rose petals provide gentle emotional comfort, mild anti-inflammatory benefits, and a soft, nurturing aroma that supports the postpartum healing environment.
Lavender Flower (optional aromatic addition)
Lavender is traditionally used to calm inflammation, ease discomfort, and support relaxation. Its aroma can also help reduce postpartum stress and tension.
Shepherd’s Purse
A traditional postpartum herb known for its styptic properties. Shepherd’s purse has historically been used to support bleeding control and tissue toning during postpartum recovery.
How to Use the Herbal Bath Tea
For a Sitz Bath

Use ½–1 cup of the dried herbal blend.

Pour 2–3 quarts of boiling water over the herbs.

Cover and steep for 20–30 minutes to create a strong herbal infusion.

Strain the herbs and pour the liquid into a sitz basin or shallow bath.

Soak for 15–30 minutes, up to 2–3 times daily as needed.
For a Full Bath

Use 1–2 cups of the dried herbal blend.

Steep in ½–1 gallon of boiling water for 20–30 minutes.

Strain and add the tea to warm bathwater.

Soak for 20–30 minutes.
Optional: Epsom salt, sea salt, or pink salt may be added at time of use for additional support with swelling, soreness, and muscle relaxation.
How to Make Herbal Pads (Postpartum Padsicles or Soothing Pads)
This blend can also be used to create herbal pads for direct, continuous support throughout the day.
Herbal Pad Instructions

Prepare a strong tea using ½–1 cup of the herbal blend steeped in 2–3 quarts of boiling water for 20–30 minutes.

Strain well and allow the tea to cool to warm or room temperature.

Soak organic cotton pads or cloth liners in the tea until fully saturated.

Gently squeeze out excess liquid (pads should be damp, not dripping).

Place pads directly in underwear and change as needed throughout the day.
Optional: Pads may be lightly chilled in the refrigerator for added cooling comfort (not frozen unless desired and tolerated).
