Black Cohosh Root

Black Cohosh Root is a traditional North American root with a long history in women’s wellness and later menopause-related herbal traditions. It is commonly researched by customers interested in women’s balance, menopause traditions, hot flashes, menstrual comfort, mood, sleep, the nervous system, and hormonal transitions. Black Cohosh is a high-caution herb that should be researched carefully with pregnancy, nursing, liver disease, hormone-sensitive conditions, or hormone medications.

Scientific Evidence / Research Status

Black Cohosh has been studied in people primarily for menopause symptoms. A 2023 review discussed by NCCIH found that certain black-cohosh-extract products were potentially beneficial for overall menopause symptoms and hot flashes, but products, preparations, and study findings vary. Research on a standardized commercial extract cannot automatically be applied to ordinary loose root. Black Cohosh should not be presented as proven to treat hormonal disorders, menstrual disease, infertility, depression, insomnia, or other medical conditions. Rare reports of serious liver injury and problems involving incorrectly identified or adulterated products require caution. NCCIH: Black Cohosh—Usefulness and Safety

Traditional Uses Listed on Jar Label

Women’s balance, menopause traditions, hot flashes, menstrual comfort, mood, sleep, nervous system, and hormonal transition.

Jar-Label Warning Highlights

High-caution herb. Avoid during pregnancy or nursing and with liver disease, hormone-sensitive conditions, or hormone medications unless professionally guided. Stop use and seek medical guidance if dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, severe fatigue, abdominal pain, or other possible liver symptoms occur.

Historical Uses / Traditional Context

Historically, Black Cohosh was used by Indigenous North American peoples for several purposes and later became prominent in Eclectic and European herbal practice. Modern commercial use centers mainly on menopause preparations, but different extracts and loose-root preparations should not be assumed to have identical effects.
