Buckthorn Bark

Buckthorn Bark is a high-caution stimulant-laxative herb traditionally associated with bowel regularity, digestive elimination, occasional constipation, and short-term elimination traditions. The exact botanical identity and proper processing must be verified because “buckthorn” can refer to different plants that are not automatically interchangeable.

Scientific Evidence / Research Status

Properly identified and processed Frangula bark has an established European herbal monograph for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation in adults and adolescents older than 12. It is not recommended for prolonged use. This does not establish “colon cleansing,” “detoxification,” or routine daily use. European Medicines Agency Frangula bark monograph

Traditional Uses Listed on Jar Label

Bowel regularity, digestive elimination, occasional constipation support, colon cleansing, waste elimination, and short-term detox support.

Jar-Label Warning Highlights

The photographed label does not show a warning section, so one should be added. Stimulant-laxative bark can cause cramps, diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and dependency with prolonged use. Avoid during pregnancy, nursing, and childhood and with intestinal obstruction, unexplained abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, severe dehydration, or kidney and heart concerns. Use care with diuretics, digoxin or other heart medicines, corticosteroids, and other laxatives.

Historical Uses / Traditional Context

Historically, properly aged and processed buckthorn bark was used as a short-term stimulant laxative in European and North American herbal practice. It was not traditionally treated as a casual daily wellness tea, and fresh or improperly processed bark may be more irritating.
