California Poppy

California Poppy is a traditional Western North American herb associated with calming, relaxation, sleep, stress, nervous-system, restlessness, and evening-tea traditions. It is commonly researched by customers interested in calm, relaxation, sleep, stress, mood, nervous-system comfort, restlessness, evening tea, gentle comfort, and tension. California Poppy is not the same plant as Opium Poppy, but it can still cause drowsiness and interact with sedating substances.

Scientific Evidence / Research Status

California Poppy contains isoquinoline alkaloids and other plant compounds studied primarily through traditional-use assessments, laboratory research, and limited clinical research. European regulators recognize its long-standing traditional use for mild mental stress and as a sleep aid while noting insufficient clinical-trial evidence. California Poppy should not be presented as proven to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia, depression, pain, nervous-system disease, substance withdrawal, or any medical condition. The European Medicines Agency classifies these uses as traditional rather than clinically established.

Traditional Uses Listed on Jar Label

Calm, relaxation, sleep, stress, mood, nervous system, restlessness, evening tea, gentle comfort, and tension.

Jar-Label Warning Highlights

Avoid during pregnancy or nursing. May cause drowsiness. Use with care with sedatives, sleep medication, anxiety medication, antidepressants, alcohol, liver-metabolized medications, children, or before surgery. Do not drive or operate machinery if drowsy. Do not combine casually with other calming herbs or medications.

Historical Uses / Traditional Context

Historically, California Poppy was used by Indigenous peoples of Western North America and later became part of American and European herbal traditions. Its above-ground parts were used differently from Opium Poppy, and the two plants should not be confused.

Please disregard the health-support wording on the jar labels. Do not choose, purchase, prepare, or use any herb based only on words written on the jar, including words such as support, inflammation, digestion, immune, heart, circulation, pain, skin, blood flow, liver, hormones, or similar wording.
