Ponca is one of the newest and sweetest blackberry varieties ever released by the University of Arkansas breeding program — the same one that created Osage and Natchez. The berries are medium to large, shiny black, and extremely sweet with a rich, complex flavor that rivals wild blackberries. They are juicy, low-acid, and perfect for fresh eating, jams, syrups, and desserts.

🌿 Growth Habit:
Ponca is a thornless, erect blackberry, meaning it grows upright and does not need trellising like trailing varieties. The canes are sturdy yet manageable, reaching about 4–5 feet tall. It produces heavily on second-year canes (floricanes), with harvests typically starting in early June and lasting several weeks.

🌞 Ease of Growing:
Ponca is one of the easiest blackberry varieties to grow — ideal for beginners or small farms. It thrives in USDA Zones 6–9, making it perfect for Arkansas (Zone 7). It’s disease-resistant, tolerant of humidity, and highly productive even in average soil.
