Gabe Nanking White Cherry (Prunus tomentosa) 🍒🌿
The Gabe Nanking White Cherry is a rare and unique fruiting shrub that produces beautiful white to blush-pink cherries with a sweeter, lower-acid flavor than traditional red Nanking cherries. Many say the flavor is richer and sweeter, making it excellent for fresh eating, while still perfect for jams, jellies, syrups, and desserts.
This cold-hardy bush cherry is both productive and beautiful. In early spring, it produces deep pink buds that open into bright white blooms, covering the plant before the leaves emerge. In late spring to early summer, those blossoms turn into clusters of sweet fruit. In Arkansas Zone 7, fruit may begin ripening around early June.
Unlike standard cherry trees, Gabe Nanking White Cherry grows as a compact shrub, typically reaching 4–8 feet tall and wide, making it ideal for food forests, edible hedges, privacy screens, or ornamental edible landscapes.
Once established, this plant is known for being:
✔️ Cold hardy
✔️ Drought tolerant
✔️ Heat tolerant
✔️ Pest and disease resistant
✔️ Highly productive
A mature bush can reportedly produce 8–12 pounds of fruit under good growing conditions.
Pollination:
For best fruit production, plant alongside another Nanking Cherry variety such as Ian or Jules for cross-pollination. While some may produce alone, yields are typically much heavier with a pollinator nearby.
How to Grow:
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. Full sun will give the best flowering and fruit production. Water regularly until established, then the plant becomes more drought tolerant. Prune lightly after fruiting if shaping is needed.
