Lobelia (Lobelia inflata / Indian Tobacco) is a unique medicinal and ornamental plant known for its delicate green foliage, small pale violet flowers, and long history in traditional herbal practices. This eye-catching herb is often sought after by herbalists and homesteaders for its historical use in respiratory support and wellness preparations.
Lobelia is an annual to biennial herb that can reach 1–3 feet tall depending on growing conditions. It prefers rich, well-draining soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates like Arkansas, afternoon shade can help prevent stress during the peak of summer. Lobelia may self-seed in the right conditions, allowing it to return year after year naturally.
This plant is shipped as a dry bare root / dormant root.
When your Lobelia arrives, it may appear dry or lifeless—this is completely normal. Dormant roots ship safely this way and wake up quickly once planted properly.
How to Care for Your Bare Root Lobelia Upon Arrival:
• Open immediately and inspect the roots.
• Soak the roots in room-temperature water for 1–2 hours before planting.
• Plant in loose, moist, well-draining soil with the crown just at soil level.
• Water thoroughly after planting.
• Keep in a shaded area with no direct sunlight for the first 3 days while it adjusts.
• After 3 days, slowly introduce it to morning sun or filtered light.
• Avoid harsh afternoon sun until the plant is fully established.
Once established, Lobelia prefers consistently moist soil but does not like to stay soggy. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
How to Grow:
Lobelia can be planted in garden beds, herb gardens, or containers. It grows best in fertile soil with regular watering. If allowed to flower and set seed, it may naturally reseed. Deadheading can prolong blooming, while allowing some flowers to mature can help build your future patch.
Whether you are building a medicinal herb garden, a pollinator space, or simply enjoy rare and useful plants, Lobelia is a wonderful addition to the homestead.
