Longevity Spinach

Longevity Spinach is a highly valuable edible and medicinal leafy green known for its fast growth, easy propagation, and year-round usefulness when protected from freezing temperatures. Although it is not true spinach, the leaves are commonly used like spinach and can be eaten fresh or cooked. It is a tender perennial in warm climates and can be grown in pots, raised beds, greenhouses, food forests, or protected growing areas.

The leaves have a mild green flavor and can be added to salads, sandwiches, wraps, smoothies, soups, stir-fries, eggs, rice dishes, and cooked greens. This plant is loved because it produces continual harvests once established and can be cut often to encourage bushier growth.

Longevity Spinach has been traditionally used in parts of Asia as a food and wellness plant. It has been studied for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, blood sugar-supporting, blood pressure-supporting, cholesterol-supporting, antimicrobial, wound-supporting, liver-supportive, kidney-supportive, and cell-protective properties. It contains beneficial plant compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, saponins, tannins, and other antioxidants. As a leafy green, it also provides fiber, minerals, plant-based nutrition, and low-calorie green food value.

One of the greatest benefits of Longevity Spinach is how easily it can be propagated. A single established plant can be multiplied into many plants by taking stem cuttings and rooting them in water or moist soil. This makes it an excellent homestead plant, survival green, container plant, and easy plant to share with others.

What You Will Receive

You will receive one bare root Longevity Spinach plant. Bare root means the plant is shipped without a pot and without heavy soil. The plant may appear wilted, tired, or stressed when it arrives because it has been shipped in a box, but this is normal for bare root plants and it usually recovers well with proper care.

Care Instructions After Arrival

Open the package immediately when it arrives. Do not leave the plant sitting in a hot mailbox, direct sun, or inside the shipping box longer than necessary.

Plant it as soon as possible into a pot with loose, well-draining soil. A pot is recommended at first so the plant can recover before being placed into the ground.

Water the plant in well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged.

Place the plant in complete shade or bright indirect light for a minimum of 3 days after arrival. Do not place it in direct sunlight during this recovery period. Direct sun too soon after shipping can shock the plant and cause wilting, burning, or dieback.

After the first 3 days, slowly introduce the plant to more light. Start with filtered light or gentle morning sun. Gradually increase sun exposure over several days. Avoid placing a newly shipped plant directly into full sun.

Do not fertilize heavily right away. Allow the plant to settle in first. After 1 to 2 weeks, it can be lightly fed with compost, worm castings, diluted fish fertilizer, or another gentle natural fertilizer.

Light Requirements

Longevity Spinach grows well in bright light, morning sun, filtered sun, or partial shade. In very hot climates, afternoon shade may help prevent stress. Once established, it can handle more sun, but young or newly shipped plants should be introduced to sunlight slowly.

Soil and Water

Grow in rich, loose, well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather, but do not allow the roots to sit in standing water. Mulch can help hold moisture and protect the roots.

Harvesting

Once the plant is established and actively growing, leaves and tender stems can be harvested as needed. Regular harvesting encourages branching and fuller growth. Always leave enough growth on the plant so it can continue producing.

Propagation

Longevity Spinach is very easy to propagate from cuttings.

Cut a healthy stem with several nodes. Remove the lower leaves. Place the cutting in a cup or jar of clean water with at least one or two nodes under the water. Keep it in bright indirect light and change the water every few days. Roots usually form easily. Once roots are developed, plant the cutting into soil and keep it shaded for a few days while it adjusts.

Cuttings may also be rooted directly in moist soil. Water propagation is usually the easiest method for beginners.

Winter Care

Longevity Spinach is frost-sensitive and should be protected from freezing temperatures. In colder climates, it should be grown in a pot and brought indoors, placed in a greenhouse, kept in a sunny window, or protected in a warm growing area before frost. Cuttings can also be rooted before winter as backup plants.

Growth may slow down during cooler months, but the plant can continue growing when kept warm and protected.
