Nutmeg is the dried seed (kernel) of the fruit of Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree in the nutmeg family (Myristicaceae). The tree is native to the Banda Islands of the Maluku ("Spice Islands") in present-day Indonesia, and nutmeg was historically one of the most fought-over commodities in world trade, prized by Arab, Portuguese, and Dutch traders for centuries before wider cultivation spread it to Grenada, Sri Lanka, and other tropical regions. Botanically, the nutmeg fruit yields two distinct spices from one seed: the hard seed kernel sold whole or ground as "nutmeg," and the lacy red aril surrounding it, which is dried separately and sold as "mace." This listing is for the whole dried nutmeg seed only.

Scientific Evidence / Research Status
Laboratory and animal research on nutmeg essential oil and seed extracts has examined antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity, largely attributed to its aromatic phenylpropanoid and terpene content. Human clinical trial data on nutmeg is very limited and largely confined to small or preliminary studies. Nutmeg should not be presented as proven to treat digestive disorders, sleep problems, mood conditions, pain, infections, or any medical condition. Separately, nutmeg toxicity has been documented in case reports: doses well above ordinary culinary amounts (commonly cited around one whole nutmeg or more, roughly several grams) have produced "nutmeg intoxication," with symptoms including agitation, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, nausea, dry mouth, and in some reported cases seizures or loss of consciousness. This toxicity is generally attributed to myristicin, elemicin, and related compounds, which are structurally related to some psychoactive and hepatotoxic substances. Traditional culinary or traditional use in small amounts does not mean higher, medicinal-style doses are safe.

Nutmeg's aromatic character comes largely from its essential oil, which contains myristicin, elemicin, safrole, eugenol, and sabinene, along with monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The seed also contains a fixed oil rich in trimyristin, along with starch and fiber. Myristicin, elemicin, and safrole are the constituents most closely associated with nutmeg's toxicity risk at high doses.
