Ficus carica ‘Celeste’ (Sugar Fig)

Ultra-Sweet • Early Ripening • Cold-Hardy • Rain-Resistant

The Celeste fig, often called the Sugar Fig, is one of the most trusted and widely grown fig varieties in the southern and central United States. It is prized for its intense sweetness, early harvest, and ability to produce reliably even in humid or rainy climates. For growers in Zone 7, Celeste is considered one of the safest and most dependable figs you can plant.

🌿 Fruit Description & Flavor

  • Fruit Size: Small to medium

  • Skin: Light brown to violet-bronze when ripe

  • Interior: Strawberry-pink to light red flesh

  • Flavor Profile: Very sweet, rich, classic fig flavor

  • Texture: Dense, jam-like interior

  • Eye: Closed (excellent resistance to splitting and souring)

  • Use: Fresh eating, preserves, drying, baking

Celeste figs are famous for being extremely sweet, even when grown in less-than-ideal summers. The closed eye makes them far less prone to spoilage in wet conditions.

🌳 Tree Growth Habit

  • Vigor: Moderate

  • Mature Height:

    • In ground: 10–15 feet

    • Container grown: 6–8 feet with pruning

  • Growth Form: Naturally compact and bushy

  • Leaves: Medium-sized, lightly lobed

Celeste stays smaller than many fig varieties, making it ideal for small yards, containers, and greenhouse growing.

🌱 Production & Yield

  • Bearing Age:

    • Often produces by year 2

    • Strong production by years 3–4

  • Crop Type:

    • Early main crop

  • Harvest Window:

    • Early to mid-summer (one of the earliest figs)

  • Yield:

    • Mature trees commonly produce 40–80 figs per season

Celeste’s early ripening allows it to finish before fall cold or heavy rains, which is a major advantage in Zone 7 and similar climates.

🌞 Growing Requirements

Sun:

  • Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)

Soil:

  • Well-draining soil is critical

  • Tolerates clay, loam, and sandy soils if drainage is good

Water:

  • Moderate water needs

  • Very drought tolerant once established

  • Avoid soggy soil

Fertilization:

  • Light feeder

  • Too much nitrogen reduces fruiting

❄️ Cold Hardiness & Zones

  • USDA Zones: 6–10

  • Cold Tolerance: Down to ~5–10°F once established

  • One of the most cold-hardy figs available

Celeste is a top recommendation for Zone 6–7 growers and performs exceptionally well with minimal winter protection.

🪴 Container & Greenhouse Growing

Celeste excels in containers:

  • Thrives in 7–20 gallon pots

  • Easy to keep compact

  • Fruits well even in smaller containers

  • Excellent for greenhouses and patios

Container trees can be moved for winter protection, ensuring reliable harvests every year.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Minimal pruning required

  • Prune in late winter to shape or control size

  • Naturally forms a neat, productive bush

  • Can be trained as a multi-stem or single-trunk tree
