Purple Milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens) 🌿🦋
Purple Milkweed is a rare and beautiful native perennial known for its deep rose-purple flower clusters, powerful pollinator attraction, and importance in supporting wildlife. This stunning milkweed variety is especially prized for attracting Monarch butterflies, whose caterpillars rely on milkweed as a host plant for survival.
Unlike some taller wild milkweeds, Purple Milkweed has a more refined ornamental look, making it perfect for flower beds, food forests, pollinator gardens, and native plant landscapes.
In late spring through summer, this plant produces vibrant purple-pink blooms that attract:
✔️ Monarch butterflies
✔️ Bees
✔️ Hummingbirds
✔️ Beneficial pollinators
As a native perennial, Purple Milkweed can return year after year once established and helps build a healthier ecosystem around your garden or homestead.
How to Grow:
Purple Milkweed thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and relatively low maintenance. It can reach around 2–4 feet tall and spreads slowly over time.
Like other milkweeds, it develops a deep taproot, making it hardy once established but somewhat sensitive to transplanting when older. Plant in a permanent location if possible.
Medicinal / Traditional Uses:
Historically, some milkweed species were used in traditional herbal practices, though caution is advised. Milkweed contains natural compounds that can be toxic if misused. Purple Milkweed is primarily grown for its ecological and ornamental value rather than internal use.
